FELGTB encourages the participation in the International campaign against institutionalized homophobia in Uganda
26/03/2010
Avaaz is a new web-based global movement, its mission is simple and democratic: to bridge the gap between the world we have and the world most people hope. At present, this organization is developing an international campaign to get as many on-line signatures as possible for a petition addressed to the Ugandan government and the Parliament Review Committee expressing our rejection to the proposed Bill to penalize homosexuality in that country.
Desirée Chacón, Secretary General of the FELGTB, has announced that “FELGTB joins this initiative and encourages all citizens to participate in it so that our rejection to this law, which directly attacks the fundamental rights of lesbians, gays, transsexuals and bisexuals, in that country will be made manifest”. Chacón has also asked the Spanish government to “suggest that all the EU members express their rejection to the institutionalized homophobia of the Ugandan State, now that Spain holds the rotary Presidency of the European Union”
Alejandro Alder, responsible of the International Cooperation and Human Rights Area of the FELGTB, has expressed that “the situation lived in Uganda is unbearable for LGBT people; most activist, the few courageous ones who still put their lives at risk taking a public stand in favor of our people, are being threatened and fear for their integrity”
Therefore, Felgtb encourages everyone to sign the petition at www.avaaz.org/en/uganda_rights in order to continue the fight against this Bill.
